GEDSI-Climate Nexus Research Initiative

What is the GEDSI-Climate Nexus Research initiative?

This project, funded by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, examines how locally led civil society organisations (CSOs) can strengthen inclusive climate action through a gender equality, disability and social inclusion lens. Our research focuses on case studies in the Philippines and Fiji, where we are collaborating with eight CSOs across the two countries, including organisations of persons with disabilities, women’s rights organisations, LGBTQIA+ organisations and youth groups.

We will produce a joint report and policy brief outlining key findings and recommendations. The initiative also seeks to build practice-based knowledge while supporting partner organisations to expand their reach, strengthen networks and enhance their influence in advancing inclusive action at the GEDSI-climate nexus.

Our role on this project

Focusing on a region highly vulnerable to climate change, this project generates practice-based knowledge to inform more inclusive, intersectional and sustainable climate policy, programming and research. Using Participatory Action Research, the study is co-designed, co-led and co-authored with CSO partners, positioning them as lead researchers and mobilising external stakeholders in the research process. Movement building and collective action are explored across all research questions.

SDDirect and partners provide programme oversight, technical support and coordination, while fostering equitable partnerships and monitoring progress. The initiative also strengthens the capacity and visibility of CSOs, enabling them to amplify their work and expand their influence.

This project is part of the call for research: ‘Exploring the GEDSI-climate nexus – lessons for adaptation and resilience.’
