What is the SEWA Climate Change Study?

SEWA is a national trade union for informal economy women, with over 3.2 million members across 18 states in India. This study was co-produced by SDDirect and SEWA Bharat and explores how self-employed women in India’s informal economy are experiencing and responding to climate change. Conducted across Delhi, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh, it focuses on eight worker groups based in rural, urban and tribal areas. The research combines surveys, interviews, and focus groups with over 1,100 participants. It provides crucial insights into the impact of climate change on SEWA members and their strategies for adaptation and climate resilience.

This study fills a crucial evidence gap and provides practical recommendations to different stakeholders on how to support a just transition for informal economy women workers.
