Informal economy women workers on the frontline of the climate crisis

This study explores how self-employed women in India’s informal economy are experiencing and responding to climate change. Conducted across Delhi, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh, it focuses on eight worker groups based in rural, urban and tribal areas. Co-produced by SDDirect and SEWA Bharat (Self-Employed Women’s Association), the research combines surveys, interviews, and focus groups with over 1,100 participants. It provides crucial insights into the impact of climate change on SEWA members, their strategies for adaptation and climate resilience, and offers practical recommendations for organisations supporting the informal economy as part of a just transition.
