Helpdesk support for accountability research and programming in Somalia


SDDirect has launched a new rapid response research and advice service to support the strengthening of good governance and social accountability in Somalia

An innovative and adaptive research-led Helpdesk has recently been launched by SDDirect in the framework of the DFID-funded Somalia Implementation and Analysis in Action of Accountability Programme (IAAP) with the goal of exploring ‘what works’ for strengthened accountability in the country.

The Help desk facility will run for 5 years and will provide a high quality, rapid response research and advice service responding to needs arising from the programme’s implementation. Through ongoing dialogue with a dedicated Relationship Manager, this facility will cover a range of technical issues, including analysis of gender and social inclusion, peer learning and experiential learning techniques, participatory research methodologies and tools for multi-stakeholder dialogue and engagement.

SDDirect is one of two partners in a consortium led by BMB Mott MacDonald to deliver the £12m DFID funded IAAP in Somalia. The programme works through a process of enquiry and experimentation to test new approaches to strengthen governance and social accountability in a range of sectors including extractive industries and civil society.  IAAAP offers a unique opportunity to test ‘proof of concept’ for a limited number of demand-driven prototype initiatives (‘innovations’) that are firmly grounded in, and shaped by, an on-going process of social research and systemic political economy analysis.

The Help desk is staffed by SDDirect empowerment, voice and accountability specialists who are available via email, telephone and Skype to respond to queries from service providers on a range of issues including:

  • Advice on programme design, linkages, coordination and collaboration across the various programme elements.
  • Specific light-touch technical advice on good practice and resources in relation to empowerment, voice and accountability, gender dimensions and social inclusion.
  • Advice on participatory methodologies and tools for stakeholder dialogue, convening and group processes.
