Semhal Getachew Asrat

Semhal Getachew Asrat has over 18 years of experience in women empowerment, gender equality and rural development field. She is seasoned, energetic and self-starter professional with multi-sectoral view and practical experience in highland and lowland areas. Her educational background in in law and social work providing her the scope to understand policy and their impact on day to day lives of men and women. Raised by a single father who championed her throughout his life, her view on gender equality and men engagement is deeply interconnected and guides her worldview. She has worked in public sector, national and international NGOs. Independently led gender equality outcome researches and supported programs to design gender responsive and transformative sectoral programs including in sexual and reproductive health, food and nutrition security, gender based violence, emergency responses, WASH and leadership. She is well experienced in qualitative research with focus on social and gender norms. She is a member of the long standing and lead women rights advocacy group – Ethiopia Women Lawyers Association (EWLA) and a board member of Action Aid International, Ethiopia office. She is currently working for Social Development Direct (SDD) in coordinating the Safeguarding Resource and Support Hub in Ethiopia. RSH is an online platform with additional support to less resourced Civil Society Organizations in Ethiopia to strengthen their policies and practices to prevent and properly address Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment (SEAH).
