At SDDirect we recognise that business has a vital role to play in poverty reduction globally and that the scale of private sector investments in the developing world dwarf development assistance by far. A dramatic increase in public awareness and demand for socially and environmentally responsible business behaviour has contributed to many businesses reviewing their operations and developing innovative approaches that add social and environmental value whilst still making good business sense.
SDDirect offers a range of services in the area of corporate social responsibility, including social impact assessments of existing and potential investments and operations, providing national and international social development experts to advise on local social and cultural considerations in a wide range of country contexts, training and capacity building in social development and guidance on compliance with international CSR frameworks. We also offer specialist expertise in gender, human rights, labour standards, enterprise and livelihoods and working in conflict affected environments.

The garment industry in Cambodia has been a vital source of income for Cambodia since 1997, accounting for almost 95% of the country’s exports. In 2004 the garment industry provided jobs to an estimated 280,000 workers, of which 85-90% were women.
